Surfboards
The history of the surfboard started way before it was first documented. Early surfboards were just plain wooden planks that were barely large enough for the surfers to stand as they ride the breaking waves. As the sport became more popular worldwide, there was a huge demand for better surfboards. And later, surfing enthusiasts demanded more customization on the boards to support different weights and preferences.
Currently, there are two general surf board designs. One of them is the long board. These kinds of surfboards are long, with ample space for surfers to stand on. The long surf board measures about 12 feet long and they are easy to paddle when catching big waves. However, long boards are harder to maneuver because of their lengths. Another surfboard design based on the long board is the gun board, which is specifically designed for riding bigger waves.
Other than long boards, there are also surf boards known as short boards. These boards are about seven feet long and they are easier to maneuver. But they are not as efficient as long boards when used to catch waves. A variation of this kind of surfboard is the fish surfboard. Fish surfboards are even smaller than a regular surfboard, measuring less than six feet. Roxy Surfboards, a renowned surfboard maker, produces all kinds of surfboards including all the surfboards mentioned above.
Whatever surfboard design it is, a modern surfboard is made up of ten basic parts. Surfboard fins are located below the surface of the board. These were introduced to provide better control of the board when riding on breaking waves. The front part of board is referred to as the nose while the end of the board is known as the tail. The body of the board where the surfer stands on is called the deck. The rail refers to the edges of the board while the part where the board touches the water is called the bottom. Stringer is the term for the wood used to support the board from breaking. The string that connects the surfer to the board is known as the leash. And lastly, rocker refers to the shape or more specifically, the curvature of the surfboard.
There are many surfboards for sale online and in surf shops. You can also purchase used surfboards but make sure that you do not pick the rusty surfboards since they are bound to do more harm than good. It is also important to ensure that the leash is durable to prevent lost surfboards. When you fall off your surfboard, the leash of the board which is attached to your body will prevent the board from drifting away from you.
