Surfing

Surfing is basically a sport that requires the surfer to ride a board on a breaking wave. Surfing is one of oldest water sports in existence, and it originated from Hawaii. It was a favorite pastime among the Hawaiians even before it was first recorded by Lieutenant James King in 1779. During that time, surfing was regarded as a test of skills for the Hawaiians. Most of the chieftains during that time displayed great skills in surfing. It was regarded as a proof that he had the ability to lead the village. Hawaiians used a plain board to ride the waves during those times.

There are also other water sports developed based on surfing. One known variation of surfing is wind surfing. Instead of a plain board, a wind surfer uses a board with a sail attached to it. And rather than using the power of waves to move them across the breaking waves, wind surfers rely on the force of the wind to propel them forward. Other surfing variations include wakeboarding, surf-skiing, knee-boarding and even kite surfing, which is a variation of surfing that uses a kite for wind power.

Surfing is already a billion dollar industry with a continuous worldwide following. There are people whose profession is only to surf, and they earn a lot by endorsing surf wear such as surf clothing, with the official surf logo of a surfing company printed on their boards. The surfboards of professional surfers are tagged with various surfing logos when they take part in major competitions. They also endorse their preferred surfer magazine. Aside from cash prizes, these advertisements and sponsorships contribute significantly to the income of professional surfers.
