Skateboard Parts
Skateboards come with different skateboard parts that can be customized to fit the different needs of different skateboarders. These skateboard parts are made with different materials that give each skateboard a distinct ability that their owners want their boards to possess. The most basic parts that a skateboard has are the deck, wheels, trucks, hardware and bearings. There are also other optional parts that are added on for better handling during trick executions, for part protection, smoother trick completion and better braking or stopping.
The skateboard deck is essentially the board itself. This deck is where the other skateboard parts are attached and is one of the main components of the skateboard. Skateboard decks are often made of compressed plies of wood, usually maple, for durability and flexibility. There are also decks that are made of a combination of materials. Aside from the wood, some decks integrate plastic, fiberglass, carbon fiber and even Kevlar into the composition to develop a sturdier, more flexible or lighter board. A skateboard's deck also varies in measurement, with the usual width being 7 to 8 inches and lengths varying between 26 to 32 inches.
The wheels of a skateboard come in pairs of two, with two in front and two in the back. They are usually made of urethane and come in a plethora of designs, sizes and colors to suit the tastes of the increasing number of skateboarders worldwide. Along with the skateboard wheels are the bearings which enable the wheels to turn without too much friction and are the part that connects the wheel to the axle.
Skateboard trucks are the parts where the axles that connect the skateboard wheels to the deck of the entire construction are found and are often made out of an aluminum alloy for durability with less weight added on. The truck has two essential parts, the base plate and the hanger. The base plate is the part that is screwed onto the deck while the hanger is the part where the axle and the wheels are found.
The hardware is basically the screws and bolts that are used to attach the truck to the deck and is made of a heavy duty alloy for durability. The skateboard hardware keeps the wheel part of the skateboard and the deck part securely fastened to each other.
Other skateboard parts, like rails, copers, nose and tail guards, risers and lappers are called accessory parts since a skateboard can operate even without them.
