Skateboarding
Skateboarding is a form of extreme sport that requires a person to perform tricks while riding on a skateboard. The person who performs this kind of extreme sport is called a skateboarder, or sometimes known as a skater as well.
The sport of skate boarding is popularized by the media as an extreme sport, despite the fact that it is considered a hobby or means of transportation. In fact, it is one of the pioneers of extreme sports. Throughout the years, the sport of skateboarding has been constantly developed by skateboarders themselves. In a 2002 report from the archives of American Sports Data, it was recorded that 12.5 million skate boarders practice the sport worldwide. Most of these skateboarders were under 18 years of age, and 74% of them are male.
The sport of skateboarding originated in the United States in the 1950s as “side surfing”, particularly in the state of California. From this time onwards, the demand for skateboards has been constantly on the rise. The earlier skate boards were usually homemade and created from flat wooden boards with roller skate wheels attached to them. Many people believe that the skate board had not evolved form “crate scooters”. Crate scooters were invented earlier than the usual habitat skateboards, and they are very similar to the latter. If you remember the film “Back to the Future”, Marty McFly and his friends were using old school skateboards in the form of scooters which were very popular among the youths of the 50s.
Around the mid 1960s, skateboarding began to emerge as a trendy and practical activity among teenagers in America. Various manufacturers such as Makaha and Hobie started building skateboards which are similar to small surfboards. It was in this time, that skateboarding was included in international competitions, and the sport was even broadcasted on the national television.
Though skateboarding became a very popular activity among young people, this activity has resulted in many injuries and in some cases, even fatalities. It is very important that skateboarders find out how to prevent injuries by breaking skateboarding falls.
